Imagine Harlem in the 1930s, where the ballrooms were filled with dancers every night, and on stage the jazz icons of the era were playing, none other than the bands of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, or Count Basie. Jazz at that time was not just a concert: with every rhythm came movement, joy, and a shared community experience. Dance and music were closely intertwined, and everyone became part of this vibrant, creative world.
Around this time, Harlem became the cultural center of the African American community arriving from the Southern states. Within these communities, extraordinary creativity flourished in music, dance, and other arts as well. This energy shaped the foundations of swing dances. The Lindy Hop, the Charleston, and the Collegiate Shag all emerged from this rich cultural environment, and to this day they preserve the spirit of self-expression, improvisation, and freedom.

As new musical styles emerged from the mid-1940s onward, the dances changed as well, but the Lindy Hop and other swing dances continued to live on in community homes. From the 1980s, a few enthusiastic dancers sought out those who had been in their prime in the 1930s (including Al Minns, Frankie Manning, and Norma Miller), and with their help the heritage of swing dance regained momentum and became known around the world.
Today, swing dance is not only a living memory of the past but also a joyful community experience present all around the world. If you’d like to take part in this energetic, improvisational, and fun form of movement, come and dance with us, here, the music, the rhythm, and the community are all waiting for you at once!

About us

The idea for the dance studio was born in 2023 at a Lindy Hop festival in Croatia, where the positive feedback we received on our teaching method and style encouraged us to do even more for swing dances and jazz culture. Since there was no active swing dance studio operating in Győr at the time, creating a new community space was an exciting opportunity. This vision came to fruition in the autumn of 2024, when the JazzSteps Dance Studio opened its doors.
We have been dancing since 2017, and inspired by international festivals, we strive to share all the playfulness, freedom, and joy that the world of jazz and swing gives us. Supporting culture, music, and community is close to our hearts – even if this is primarily a hobby driven by love.
We warmly welcome anyone who would like to connect more closely with jazz or join a friendly, inclusive community. You can find up-to-date information about our current courses and events under the “Dance Classes” and “Events” sections – we look forward to welcoming you!

Our dances
LINDY HOP
Lindy hop is an energetic, improvisational swing dance that originated in 1930s Harlem. Its playfulness and sense of freedom still make it captivating today.
SOLO JAZZ
Solo jazz is the individual, improvisational form of authentic jazz dance. Its vibrant rhythms and expressive movements invite personal expression.
We believe one cannot exist without the other, so in our classes we always start with solo jazz, followed by partnered dancing.

FAQ
Can I sign up on my own?
Yes. If you register without a partner, you will be placed on a waiting list so we can maintain a balanced leader–follower ratio. We’ll notify you once a spot opens up (when someone of the opposite role registers). While you’re on the waiting list, no payment is required.
Do I need prior dance experience?
No. Anyone is welcome to join, we’re happy to start with a clean slate, and equally happy if you already have experience in other dance styles.
Do you rotate partners in class? Is it mandatory?
We rotate partners during classes. It often helps to try a move with someone other than your partner — sometimes it clicks right away, and by the time you return to your partner, it feels easy together. You’ll also get to know others in your course, and the atmosphere is usually great when everyone rotates. We don’t require it, but for your progress the benefits are incomparable.
What do “leader” and “follower” mean?
During registration, you’ll be asked whether you dance as a leader or a follower.
Leaders are often men and followers often women, but many dancers learn and enjoy both roles, ours is an open and inclusive community.
What is the registration process?
By submitting your registration, you commit to attending the course or event and paying the participation fee. Within three days of registering, we’ll contact you by email with detailed information and next steps.
